Artistic Journey: From Stroke to Strength

Michiel Ligteringen, born on August 18, 1997, and currently residing in Amsterdam, embarked on his artistic path in an unexpected way. In 2019, a brain stroke dramatically changed the course of his life. The months of recovery that followed were both difficult and transformative—not only in terms of his health, but also in how he began to express himself creatively. During this time, he discovered a new form of artistic expression as a self-taught artist.
In art, as in life, everything begins with a blank canvas. For Michiel's work the inspiration came from the essence of his recovery. He began drawing shapes that mirrored the intricate networks of veins and blood vessels, symbolizing the interconnectedness of life. These forms became a way for him to communicate his experiences, struggles, and growth, echoing the messages of his brain's transformation. It all started with the letter "L" — a simple yet powerful representation of both his surname and his personal evolution in life. This letter became the foundation of his work, symbolizing both fragility and strength.
What began as small marker drawings gradually expanded into larger, more expressive works. Each piece carries the weight of his personal experience and invites viewers to discover not only the letter "L" but also a part of their own story. Just as veins pulse with life, his art flows with the energy of human experience.
Each piece he creates is a visual representation of his personal journey—an invitation to explore the connection between mind, body, and spirit. Through his work, Michiel hopes to inspire others to embrace their own stories of transformation. "Art flows through my veins, and I am grateful to share it with you".
